The event was sponsored by the Downtown North Wilkesboro Partnership and proceeds will be used by the partnership for downtown promotions, marketing, events and beautification.
The event was a sellout. Tickets were $20. A partnership board member was at each house to direct tour goers. Attendees toured at their own pace and in no particular order.
“We are thrilled with the community’s response to this special event and apologize to those who were unable to purchase tickets,” said Ginger Edmiston and Beth Bond, tour organizers.
The homes on the tour were Mary Keener’s at 1102 J Street, Dr. Jack McLarney at 1006 J Street, Drs. Leo and Ila Baugham at 1102 E Street, Dr. John and Catharina Hettiarachchi at 1014 E Street, Tom Kinlaw at 904 E Street, and Jed and Jenny Cockrell at 710 Ninth Street. Also the North Wilkesboro Presbyterian Church, located at 804 E Street, was on the tour.
The six homes and North Wilkesboro Presbyterian Church were open to the public from 4-8 p.m. The event concluded with a reception at Benton Hall from 7-9 p.m. Light refreshments and a performance by the Cub Creek Handbell Choir provided entertainment.
“Tickets were limited to 250 so that homes were not overly crowded and so that parking and traffic flow was not an issue,” said Crystal Keener, executive director for the Downtown North Wilkesboro Partnership.
A similar event was held during the Christmas holidays several years ago. It was sponsored by the Wilkes Art Gallery and Cultural Arts Council, said Ms. Keener.
The partnership committee decided on which houses to include on the tour by their proximity to one another, age, architecture and general knowledge of the owners.
“I’m tremendously appreciative to our board members for all their hard work planning and executing this Christmas tour. And for the homeowners who graciously agreed to share their holiday traditions with so many,” said Ms. Keener.
