Incentives - Downtown District
The Facade Grant Program provides financial assistance to downtown business owners that would like to make exterior improvements that reflect the historical nature of the district and property. This is a 60/40 matching grant with a maximum of $4,000 or $6,000 depending on the size of the building.
The architectural quality of North Wilkesboro's downtown area is important to the entire town, its history, image and economy. The appearance of downtown is largely determined by the condition of its buildings. Because this appearance also forms the basis of the public's overall impression of downtown, the upgrading and preservation of North Wilkesboro's downtown is crucial to the continued livelihood of North Wilkesboro. The Partnership and the Town of North Wilkesboro would like to encourage all downtown property owners to participate in this facade grant program.

2. February 2021 - I was the recipient of a facade grant which enabled the aesthetics of a 100 year old building to be vastly improved.
Thanks to the 60/40 split, I was able to make this improvement. My business is greatly enhanced by the exterior refresh, as well as, adding to the overall street scene which is crucial to the success of the Town.
The application process was simple and timely. The process assured that a cohesive and “in-keeping” look is attractive and uniform. It’s accountability, as far as, estimates and financials make sure both the Town and the merchant are protected and in good standing with public transparency.
I am most appreciative of the improvements the grant afforded my business.

Tax Credits
Income tax incentives for the rehabilitation of historic structures are important tools for historic preservation and economic development in North Carolina. A federal income tax credit for the rehabilitation of historic structures first appeared in 1976, and today consists of a 20% credit for the qualifying rehabilitation of income-producing historic properties.
Since 1976, over 1,300 completed "certified rehabilitation" projects have been reviewed by the N.C. State Historic Preservation Office, representing over 500 million dollars of investment in historic properties. The spinoff from all this activity includes job creation, downtown and neighborhood revitalization, improved community appearance, and greater community pride. Historic preservation is smart growth, and smart investment.
